MyEndoscope Project Lead Nao Sumi Selected for the GTIE Overseas Bootcamp and Begins Training at DMZ in Toronto

Nao Sumi, Project Lead of MyEndoscope and a master’s student at the Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo, has been selected for the 2026 GTIE Overseas Bootcamp for Graduate Students and is currently participating in the program’s overseas training in Toronto, Canada. The program is supported through the UTokyo GTIE Office and is being conducted in collaboration with DMZ.
The Toronto program is scheduled from August 9 to 23, 2026. It includes workshops, one-on-one mentoring, interviews with local stakeholders, and other activities designed to help participants refine their business ideas and explore pathways for global expansion.
MyEndoscope is a portable endoscopy training system that combines an endoscope-shaped controller with a 3D simulation application. The project aims to provide physicians and medical students with an environment in which they can repeatedly practice endoscopic examination and treatment techniques anytime, anywhere, and without requiring access to a full clinical endoscopy setup.
The system is also being developed to record and analyze users’ operating data, with the longer-term goal of providing AI-assisted skill assessment and personalized feedback based on the techniques of expert endoscopists. Through this approach, MyEndoscope seeks to reduce disparities in access to high-quality endoscopy training across hospitals, regions, and countries.
During his time in Toronto, Sumi will engage with entrepreneurs, researchers, healthcare professionals, and business development experts to examine the needs of the North American healthcare and medical education markets. He will also explore potential use cases, implementation models, research collaborations, and partnerships that could support future clinical validation and international deployment of MyEndoscope.
The insights and connections gained through the GTIE and DMZ programs will be incorporated into the continued development of MyEndoscope and its global strategy.

Japan has developed some of the world’s most advanced endoscopic technologies and techniques. Our goal is to make that expertise accessible to physicians around the world through a training environment that can be used anytime and anywhere.
During the Toronto program, I hope to speak directly with people working in healthcare, medical education, research, and entrepreneurship in North America. We will use these conversations not only to improve the product itself, but also to validate how MyEndoscope should be introduced, evaluated, and implemented in different healthcare systems.
I look forward to turning the knowledge and relationships gained through GTIE and DMZ into future international research collaborations, clinical validation, and global deployment.
